With our expansion of original political reporting, we are seeking a Parliamentary Proceedings Editor to lead on coverage of key events in the UK Parliament. Working closely with the Editor, this role will contribute to the organisation’s mission of delivering accessible and insightful parliamentary journalism.
This role is suited to someone with a keen interest in Westminster politics and a strong grasp of parliamentary procedure, debates, and legislation. You will be responsible for producing two high-quality articles per week on Parliamentary events, agreed in advance with the Editor. Articles may include debate summaries, committee highlights, legislative analysis, or key ministerial statements.
Please Note:
- We are a student-run organisation – most of our writers are university or sixth-form students.
- This is a voluntary and unpaid role.
- We’re looking for someone who is politically engaged and active online, with enough time to commit to a growing, collaborative editorial team.
Who We’re Looking For
- A university student (preferred but not essential)
- Strong journalistic instincts with experience or interest in political reporting
- Excellent writing, editing, and analytical skills – or the passion to develop them!
- Solid understanding of UK parliamentary processes
- Reliable and able to meet article deadlines consistently
- A good team player who can help lead others
- Keen to grow your experience in digital media and reporting
- Experience with or willingness to learn WordPress and SEO basics
- Familiarity with political news cycles and media ethics
What You’ll Do
- Produce two original articles per week covering notable events in the UK Parliament, as agreed with the Editor.
- Write accessible and engaging content, including debate summaries, bill tracking, committee coverage, and MP statements.
- Ensure content meets high editorial standards in accuracy, neutrality, and clarity.
- Proofread and fact-check your own work prior to publication.
- Collaborate with the Editor to select topics and ensure a balanced editorial calendar.
- Assist in identifying key parliamentary dates or events for future coverage.
- Use WordPress to upload and format articles for publication.
- Source copyright-free images and attribute them correctly where used.
- Promote articles via social media (X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Instagram), in collaboration with our social media team.
- Uphold our values of fairness, impartiality, and political literacy in all content produced.
Skills You’ll Use (or Learn!)
- Prior experience writing about Parliament or UK politics
- Knowledge of legislative processes and key political figures
- Confidence using digital publishing platforms
- Awareness of copyright and journalistic standards
- Basic SEO and headline-writing skills (training provided)
